An app driver was tortured and forced to dig his own grave by a gang on 7 July 2019 in Angra dos Reis, Costa Verde, Rio de Janeiro State.
Alleged Informant Tried by Traffickers’ Court
The gang alleged that he provided evidence to the São Paulo Military Police (PM), and was then been tried by a traffickers’ court under Brazil’s parallel justice system run by career criminals.
The driver was requested to pick up a customer in the neighbourhood where he normally resides, where gunmen approached him and said that they knew he had acted as a PM informer. The victim is a resident of the Camorim Grande neighbourhood.
The criminals said that he would be tried by a trafficker’s court, and that his sentence for his actions would be death. The victim reported that the traffickers took him and their belongings to their vehicle.
The driver was then taken to a forest where he was tortured and forced to dig his own grave. The victim was shot but managed to flee after the criminals became distracted.
He escaped to a local population centre where he was rescued and taken to the General Hospital of Japuíba, where he underwent surgery and is in serious condition. The case was registered at the local police station. PM are investigating the event.
A de facto parallel justice system is run by gangs across Brazil to prevent the civilian population from assisting the police. Punishments often involve death or torture and imprisonment in a gang safe house.
