A security guard was shot in the head in a robbery of an armoured car in front of a bank in Guariba, São Paulo State. The guard had reportedly fired on the robbers and was hit by a glancing shot in the exchange.

The armoured vehicle of the security company Protege was parked in front of a Caixa Econômica Federal branch on Rua Rui Barbosa when the robbery attempt took place at 10:50 on the morning of Monday 8 July 2019.

Customers Took Cover from Gunfire and Avoided Injury

Customers of the bank dropped to the floor by the ATM area of the branch to avoid the gunfire, which occurred within meters of the main service area of the bank. Cover was limited, with only large windows, glass doors and some furniture between the customers and perpetrators. No civilians were reported injured, though the glass doors of the branch were shot out in the exchange. The guard was taken to hospital by the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu).

The robbers were ultimately unsuccessful and fled in two vehicles without the money.

Police searches took place with assistance from a Helibras HB-350 Esquilo (Águia) helicopter. Police investigators have collected bullets and casings at the scene, and are looking for fingerprints. One of the vehicles was later found abandoned by the perpetrators in Jardim Bela Vista. A cap and other items of clothing were found inside the vehicle.
